On March 1st, Austin’s Zilker Park will kick off its 86th annual ABC Zilker Kite Festival. With attractions such as food booths, pet adoption centers, and contests, the 2015 festival will be an event the whole family will love and enjoy.
The Kite Contest, a free event offering eight different categories from the “Steadiest Kite” to “Most Unusual Kite”, is scheduled to turn the park into a sea of bright colors and designs. Only homemade single line kites will be accepted, according to contest rules. The contest is open to anyone who wants to compete. Even the kiddos can join the fun in the 50 Yard Dash!
To get some awesome festival perks while giving back to a good cause, purchase a ticket to attend Maudie’s Kite Fest Breakfast where you can enjoy a meal from Maudie’s Tex Mex and coffee provided by Wanderlust Coffee Truck. All proceeds from the donation will benefit Communities In Schools of Central Texas. Tickets can be purchased online before the festival date.
Don’t own a kite? Not to worry! Festival-goers can purchase a kite on site at the park and attend the Kite Festival workshop to learn how to properly build a kite for its best flight. The workshop tent will open at 11am and close at 4pm.
Festival hours are from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Whether you’re attending just for fun or are a serious kite flyer, be sure to bring your dog, pack a picnic, and get ready to see your kite soar at one of Austin’s most beloved events! If it should rain, the Kite Festival is plans to reschedule on March 8th.
