| Built in the 1930s, the three-mile-long Buchanan Dam is said to be the largest multiarch dam in the country. Its construction created the Highland Lakes, a 128-mile chain of seven lakes, of which Lake Buchanan is the largest and highest. Admission: Free. | Geologists estimate the age of this natural wonder—which stays at a comfortable 69 degrees year-round—at a million years. During its relatively recent past it housed a Civil War Confederate gunpowder factory and a Roaring Twenties nightclub. An observation tower, picnic areas, and nature trails are nearby. | On this two-and-a-half-hour cruise of Lake Buchanan, stay comfortable on the enclosed 70-foot deck while you enjoy the view of dramatic limestone cliffs along the shore.
